Study in China
May 18- 31, 2009

I write to encourage attention to Mason's unusually rich study abroad programs. In a difficult time, the opportunity to consider one of our well-organized programs is unusually important, as part of our reaction to the global challenges we are facing.

Study abroad provides perspectives and direct experience seldom available in normal classrooms. Students discover new ways to see themselves and to assess how they are seen by others. It is an opportunity for self development that increases people's confidence and their competence in presenting themselves to the world.

The experience of spending extended periods of time in another country/culture is an invaluable opportunity to get beyond stereotypes all too prevalent in today's world. For many students, it is a life-changing experience that positively affects them throughout their lives. To me, study abroad is the one of the most vital opportunities in a university community. I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is to keep these programs going when the world situation is so divisive.

I, therefore, encourage GMU students to take full advantage of these incredible study abroad opportunities.

Thank you.
