Project objective. To improve nonparametric regression forecasting approach during abnormal traffic events (such as incidents).

Project abstract. The University of Virginia has been a leader in the application and extension of nonparametric regression in traffic condition forecasting. This approach has proven to effectively forecast under prevailing conditions. The purpose of this project is to investigate means to improve the approach in terms of forecasting under abnormal events (such as incidents). The study will utilize field data collected from freeways in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, archived in the Smart Travel Lab.

Budget.  $140.000

Relation to other research. No immediate relationship

Technology transfer. Papers in professional journals and presentations at conferences

Potential benefits. Improved condition forecasting.
