Project: Disparate transportation data integration

Principle Investigator: Dr. William T. Scherer, University of Virginia, 804-982-2069 wts@virginia.edu

Project Objective: To improve UVA Smart Travel Lab database management through cooperation with the University of Virginia Library's multi-discipline archiving initiative.

Project Abstract: Modern information technologies have led to a proliferation of data in virtually all scientific and engineering disciplines, including transportation, yet this data is often poorly categorized, stored, and related to databases in sister disciplines. In an effort to correct this problem, the University of Virginia Library has developed a prototype program for archiving such information, including U.S. census data, climate data, crime data and ITS data. This research project is the participation in the Library program by UVA's Smart Travel Lab. The ultimate objective is to improve the utilization of Smart Travel Lab data so as to assist in improving route planning, road construction, and evacuation management.

Milestones: Project completion by June 30, 2005.

Student Involvement: 1 Master's student, 4 undergraduates
