Project: ITS infrastructure maintenance management

Principle investigator: Hualiang (Harry) Teng, 434-924-1461, hht4n@virginia.edu

External contact: Dwayne Cook, VDOT, Hampton Roads Smart Traffic Center

Project objective: To evaluate the existing ITS infrastructure maintenance management

Project abstract: Maintaining ITS infrastructure is needed for the operation of ITS. The goal and objectives of the system cannot be achieved if the ITS system doesn't perform reliably due to the lack of maintenance. So far, ITS maintenance has been focused on a macroscopic level where institutional issues have been discussed. The maintenance issues such as the life cycle of system components and the system as a whole haven't been touched upon.
In this study, the issue will be focused on the life cycles and costs of system components and the whole system as a whole will be investigated based on the maintenance records from Hampton Roads and Nova. The maintenance policy in term of preventive maintenance interval will be evaluated with comparison to the existing maintenance practices in these two traffic management centers.

Tasks:

1. Interview with the Hampton Roads and Nova STC to know their maintenance practices
2. Request maintenance records for field device, communications and in-house hardware and software
3. Clean the maintenance records for research use
4. Determine the life cycles for field device, communications, hardware and software
5. Determine the costs for field device, communications, hardware and software
6. Determine the life cycles of the system that consists of the integration of field device, communications, hardware and software
7. Determine the optimal maintenance policy vs. cost

Milestones: Project will be completed in August 2004.
