VIRGINIA TECH TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) is a primary source of transportation-related research and study at Virginia Tech, the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The mission of VTTI is to conduct innovative research in transportation that will contribute solutions for major regional and national transportation problems. The Institute is supported by over 20 academic faculty, over 35 full-time research and administration personnel, and over 40 graduate students.

Current research activities span all areas of ITS, including —

  • concept design and evaluation,
  • model and algorithm development,
  • simulation and controlled tests,
  • product prototyping,
  • field test design, and
  • policy studies.
Learn more about Virginia Tech’s ITS experimental highway segment, SMART ROAD.

The Institute has a wide variety of state of the art research facilities and tools available. The Smart Road is a 4-mile long stretch of heavily instrumented highway being used for a variety of testing of automotive and traffic control equipment. State-of-the-art weather-making machinery permits a wide range of snow, ice, rain and fog conditions for testing purposes, and sophisticated traffic control system permit the testing of advanced ITS technologies.

VTTI also maintains a fleet of eight instrumented vehicles capable of recording electronic and video data thru sensors and cameras mounted inconspicuously in the vehicles’ cabs. This data is used for research on in-vehicle displays, collision warning and avoidance systems, commercial vehicle operator fatigue assessment, and advanced driver communication and information systems.
