The universitys Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), housed in the Department of Civil Engineering, is in its eleventh year as a member of the Mid-Atlantic Universities Transportation Center. The Virginia Department of Transportations research arm, the Virginia Transportation Research Council, supports the Center with graduate student stipends and faculty research grants. Faculty from Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering work with the Center for Transportation Studies.
The universitys Smart Travel Laboratory is a unique, state-of-the-art facility developed for ITS research. It links directly to operational traffic control and management systems in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. Data and software from these systems support research on
The Center for Transportation Studies also has access to the facilities and library of the Virginia Transportation Research Council, which is located on university grounds.
