CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION STUDIES

The University of Virginia is a nationally renowned research university with breadth and strength in a range of disciplines, such as law, economics, political science, and engineering.

The university’s Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), housed in the Department of Civil Engineering, is in its eleventh year as a member of the Mid-Atlantic Universities Transportation Center. The Virginia Department of Transportation’s research arm, the Virginia Transportation Research Council, supports the Center with graduate student stipends and faculty research grants. Faculty from Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering work with the Center for Transportation Studies.

The university’s Smart Travel Laboratory is a unique, state-of-the-art facility developed for ITS research. It links directly to operational traffic control and management systems in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. Data and software from these systems support research on —

  • traffic flow,
  • safety impacts of ITS,
  • traffic forecasting, simulation, and
  • ITS decision support systems.

The Center for Transportation Studies also has access to the facilities and library of the Virginia Transportation Research Council, which is located on university grounds.
