Britain,
the European Union and
the Challenge of Globalization
This program will explore issues in contemporary British politics and public policy with a special focus on Britain's role in the European Union and the wider world. The outcome of the recent general election has changed the face of British politics. For the first time since World War II, Britain has a coalition government. How will the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats work together to tackle the formidable social and economic challenges facing the country? How will they reconcile their radically different positions on contentious policy issues such as immigration and relations with the European Union? How will David Cameron, the young and inexperienced new prime minister, lead Britain within the European Union and globally, especially as his country is reeling from the financial crisis? Students in the 2011 Oxford program will have an excellent opportunity to study British politics and public policy during a period of unprecedented challenge and change in the United Kingdom.
