Maxi
Schoeman holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Wales and
is Head of the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria
in South Africa. Previous to her present position she taught at the Rand Afrikaans
University in Johannesburg for 11 years. She was previously a research fellow
and visiting scholar at Cambridge University and at the Danish Institute of International
Studies. Prof. Schoeman serves on the editorial boards of African Affairs (UK)
and Foreign Policy (USA). She is deputy chair of the board of the Institute for
Global Dialogue, a South African think-tank on foreign policy, a member of the
board of the South African Association of Political Scientists and a research
associate of the Africa Institute. Her areas of specialization are African political
economy, African security and gender issues. She publishes regularly in national
and international journals and is currently working on a (co-authored) book on
gender in post-apartheid southern Africa. She has delivered papers at conferences
in various African and European countries and in the US and Canada. Earlier this
year she spent three weeks at the National Defense University in Washington DC
participating as a facilitator in its senior leadership course.
